Piano in the Plaza is an on going installation designed to raise public interest, activate city spaces, promote engagement, and illicit dialog among San Diego residents and visitors.
The piano(s) will encourage the expression of creativity as well as showcase/represent the warm, lighthearted nature of San Diego’s urban culture. As a 24hr a day, year round presence in the city, the public piano will give everyone an opportunity to engage with their hidden and potential talents. Urban areas are about collaboration and sharing - by putting pianos in our public plazas, everyone gets to enjoy the positive effects of not only the music, but the public comradery that the installation has instigated. The community would also play a role in deciding the the location(s) of the piano itself.
To gain public interest, as well as create a more structured experience for the community, once a month, a new pianist will showcase their talents along with an orchestra or ensemble of instruments of his or her choice. To really engage the public, local community members will have the opportunity to sign up to participate and or perform participate/sign up to perform at the monthly opening of Piano in the Plaza.
